Explanation
Arjuna asks Krishna to describe in full his divine glories, the vibhūtis by which he pervades all these worlds and abides in them. Since only Krishna knows himself, only he can say where and how he is present in the universe.
This is the formal request that leads to the long list of vibhūtis in verses 20 to 39. Shankara notes that Arjuna asks for the glories themselves because the Lord's essence is beyond words; through his manifestations, at least, he can be pointed out. Ramanuja reads the vibhūtis as the Lord's rule over all things, which he maintains by pervading them. The word aśeṣeṇa, fully, shows Arjuna's eagerness; Krishna will reply in verse 19 that a full account is impossible, so he will give only the chief ones.
