Explanation

Neither the hosts of gods nor the great sages know my origin, Krishna says, because I am the source of the gods and of the great sages in every way. Those who come from a source cannot fully grasp what came before them; the cause stands beyond the reach of its effects.

Shankara reads prabhava as Krishna's coming forth or manifestation, his divine birth and power, which even the gods cannot fathom. Ramanuja understands it as his greatness and power. Both see the logic as the same: the gods and rishis are themselves born of him, so their knowledge cannot encompass him. This sets up the next verse, which says how he can nonetheless be known: as unborn and beginningless. The verse also explains why Arjuna, later in the chapter, says only Krishna knows himself.
