Explanation
Among horses, know me as Uchchaihshravas, born from the churning of the ocean for nectar. Among lordly elephants I am Airavata, and among men I am the king. Here Krishna names two legendary animals and one human office as his special manifestations, each the best of its kind.
Both Uchchaihshravas and Airavata emerged, according to the Puranas, during the churning of the milk ocean (samudra-manthana), when gods and demons together sought amṛta, the nectar of immortality. Uchchaihshravas, whose name means loud-neighing or long-eared, is a splendid white horse, often described as the mount of Indra. Airavata is the white elephant who carries Indra. Among human beings, the king represents the Divine through his duty to protect and uphold dharma; Shankara and others take narādhipa in this sense. The excellence lies in the role, not the person.
