Explanation

Among the Daityas I am Prahlada, Krishna says. Among those who count and measure I am time. Among beasts I am the lion, king of animals, and among birds I am Garuda, son of Vinata. Each is the most outstanding of its kind, whether in devotion, power or majesty.

The Daityas are a race of asuras descended from Diti; Prahlada, son of the demon king Hiranyakashipu, remained devoted to Vishnu despite his father's persecution and was saved by the Narasimha incarnation. His inclusion shows that the Divine shines even in a family opposed to it. Shankara reads kalayatām as those who calculate, and time as the great reckoner of all. The lion, mṛgendra, is lord of beasts. Vainateya is Garuda, the mighty eagle born of Vinata, who serves as Vishnu's mount.
