Explanation

Of all creations, O Arjuna, I am the beginning, the middle and the end. Among the branches of knowledge I am the knowledge of the Self, and among those who debate I am vāda, honest reasoning that seeks the truth.

Verse 20 said Krishna is the beginning, middle and end of beings; here the same is said of all created things. Adhyātma-vidyā, knowledge of the Self, is ranked highest among sciences because, as Shankara notes, it leads to liberation. Commentators following the Nyaya tradition distinguish three kinds of argument: vāda, discussion aimed at finding the truth; jalpa, arguing only to win; and vitaṇḍā, mere attack on the other side. Shankara identifies Krishna with vāda, the honest form, which makes this verse a classic statement on the ethics of debate.

Living it today

In discussions, argue to find the truth, not to win. Be willing to be persuaded when the other side is right.
