Explanation

I am death that carries all away, Krishna says, and I am the source of all that is yet to come. Among feminine powers I am fame, prosperity and fine speech, memory, intelligence, steadfastness and forbearance. The Divine is present both in great cosmic forces and in fine qualities of character.

The first half pairs endings and beginnings: the same Divine that takes all things away also brings forth what is to come. The seven qualities in the second half are feminine nouns in Sanskrit and are also personified as goddesses; some commentators identify them as daughters of Daksha. Shankara explains that a person who has even a trace of these qualities is honoured by the world. Śrī is also the name of Lakshmi, goddess of fortune, and vāk is speech, associated with Sarasvati. Smṛti, medhā and dhṛti describe a mind that remembers, understands and holds firm.
