Explanation

Krishna begins a list of the states and qualities found in living beings: intelligence, knowledge, freedom from confusion, forgiveness, truthfulness, restraint of the senses and calm of mind; pleasure and pain, coming into being and ceasing to be, fear and fearlessness. The sentence continues into the next verse, which says that all of these arise from him alone.

The list deliberately includes opposites: pleasure and pain, fear and fearlessness, existence and non-existence. Shankara explains that all of them, pleasant and unpleasant, arise according to beings' own karma, while the Lord is their ultimate source. Ramanuja stresses that the Lord is the one who sustains and governs every such state. Commentators define dama as restraint of the outer senses and śama as tranquillity of the inner mind. The point is that nothing in our inner life lies outside the Divine's reach.

When fear or sorrow arises, remember it too has a place in the larger whole. That can loosen its grip and help you respond with calm.
