Explanation

Non-attachment, freedom from clinging to children, spouse, home and the like, and a mind that stays constantly even whether what comes is welcome or unwelcome: these are further signs of knowledge. The aim is love without clinging and balance in good times and bad.

Krishna is not asking anyone to stop loving family or caring for a home. Commentators distinguish asakti, simple non-attachment, from anabhishvanga, the deeper habit of merging one's identity with others so that their joys and sorrows become one's own torment. The goal is love without possessiveness. Tilak and Gandhi both stress that the householder can practise this evenness while fully doing his duties.

Living it today

Love your family fully, but let their choices be theirs. Caring deeply and clinging tightly are not the same thing.
