Explanation

Others, who do not know these paths themselves, hear the teaching from others and worship accordingly. They too, devoted to what they have heard, cross beyond death. Faithful listening is honoured alongside the more demanding paths. Sincere hearing and faithful practice also carry a person across.

This is a generous verse. Not everyone can meditate deeply or study philosophy, yet faithful listening and sincere worship are honoured as a real path. Shankara notes that such people, relying on the words of teachers, also gradually reach the goal. Many readers find here a place for ordinary devotees who learn from satsang, kirtan and the guidance of elders, without needing scholarly training.

Living it today
