Explanation

When the embodied one meets death while sattva is dominant, he reaches the pure worlds of those who know the highest. The quality that dominates the mind at death shapes where the soul goes next, and a life rich in sattva rises to higher realms.

The state of mind at death is said to shape what follows, an idea also found in chapter 8. A life lived largely in sattva tends to end in sattva, leading to higher and purer realms. Commentators note that these are still within the cycle of birth, not final liberation, which lies beyond all three gunas. Shankara explains the knowers of the highest as those who worship the great principles of creation.

Living it today

How we live shapes how we leave. Fill ordinary days with clarity and kindness, and the end will take care of itself.
