Explanation
Dying when rajas dominates, one is born among those attached to action. Likewise, dying in tamas, one is born in the wombs of the deluded. The quality that rules us at death carries over into the next life, for good or ill.
Death in rajas leads to a human birth among busy, driven people; death in tamas leads to dull or unaware forms of life. Shankara takes the deluded wombs to include animal and plant births. The teaching is not meant to frighten but to show that the qualities we cultivate carry their own momentum. Modern readers often take it psychologically too: the habits we feed decide the kind of life we keep living.
Living it today
The habits you repeat today become the person you wake up as tomorrow. Choose them with care.
