Explanation
Going beyond these three qualities, from which the body arises, the embodied one is freed from birth, death, old age and sorrow, and attains immortality. The gunas build the body, so rising above them means rising above the whole cycle of bodily suffering.
The gunas produce the body, and with it the whole cycle of birth, ageing and death. Rising above them means rising above that cycle. Shankara reads deha-samudbhava as the gunas being the seed of the body. This verse states the goal in plain terms, and it naturally prompts Arjuna's question in the next verse: how does such a person behave, and how can one get there?
