Explanation

Krishna replies: O son of Pandu, such a person does not resent illumination, activity or delusion when they arise, nor long for them when they cease. The effects of the three gunas come and go, and he neither fights them nor chases them, staying calm and free in himself.

Illumination, activity and delusion are the effects of sattva, rajas and tamas. The one beyond the gunas lets them come and go like weather, without hating their arrival or craving their return. Shankara notes that this absence of reaction is the sign of one established in the self. Commentators point out that even clarity is not grasped at; the person is free in relation to all three.

Living it today

Let good days and dull days come and go without fighting or chasing them. Steadiness is built in that acceptance.
