Explanation
For I am the foundation of Brahman, of the immortal and imperishable, of eternal dharma and of absolute happiness. With these words the chapter ends, pointing the seeker beyond the three gunas to Krishna as the source and support of every lasting good.
The chapter closes with Krishna naming himself as the ground of everything the seeker hopes to reach. The verse has puzzled readers, since Brahman is usually the highest. Shankara explains that Krishna here speaks as the inner self, which is the true basis of Brahman, so the two are one. Ramanuja takes brahman here as the pure individual self, of which the Lord is the support. Devotional schools read it as the personal God standing above the impersonal Brahman. All agree it ties the path beyond the gunas to Krishna himself.
