Explanation
The great Brahman, primal nature, is my womb, and in it I place the seed. From that, O Bharata, all beings are born. Material nature is the mother, and the Lord who places the seed of life in her is the father of every creature that exists.
Here brahman does not mean the supreme reality but the vast material nature, prakriti, called great because it is the source of all forms. Shankara explains it as the Lord's maya made of the three gunas, into which he places the seed of conscious life. Ramanuja reads the seed as the mass of individual souls joined with matter. The image of father and mother is a warm, familial way of describing creation.
