Explanation

Whatever forms are born in all the wombs of the world, O son of Kunti, the great nature is their mother, and I am the father who gives the seed. All beings in every species share these same divine parents.

Every species, every individual body, is the child of the same two parents: material nature and the Lord. Commentators read this as the theological basis for seeing all beings as one family. Ramanuja emphasises the Lord as the ultimate source of both the matter and the souls; Shankara again treats nature as the Lord's power. Many modern readers see in this verse a foundation for reverence towards all life.

Living it today
