Explanation
I am seated in the hearts of all; from me come memory, knowledge and their loss. I alone am to be known through all the Vedas; I am the author of Vedanta and the knower of the Vedas.
The verse unites the inner and outer paths: the same Divine dwells in our hearts and is the goal of all scripture. Memory and understanding — and even forgetting — come from that inner presence. Chapter 15, in which this verse appears, is recited before meals in many ashrams.
