Sri Krishna Chapter 2, Verse 59 With word-by-word notes

viṣayā vinivartante nirāhārasya dehinaḥ |
rasavarjaṃ raso'pyasya paraṃ dṛṣṭvā nivartate ||

Meaning in English

Sense objects fall away from one who abstains from them, but the taste for them remains. Even that taste fades away once the Supreme is seen.

Explanation

When a person abstains, the objects of the senses fall away, but the inner longing for them remains; that longing too disappears when one has seen the Supreme.

Fasting or abstaining can stop the outer enjoyment, but not the hidden taste for it. Only a higher joy — the experience of the Divine — dissolves the craving itself.

Living it today

Instead of only fighting a bad habit, fill your time with something higher that you love — the craving fades by itself.
