Explanation

In this way you will be freed from the bonds of action, with their good and bad results. With your mind steadied in the yoga of renunciation, you will be liberated and come to me. Offering every action to God frees one from karma.

This verse gives the result of the practice in 9.27, where Krishna asked Arjuna to offer everything he does, eats and gives to him. Offering all action to God is itself sannyasa yoga, renunciation within action, not abandonment of action. Because the doer claims nothing, neither good nor bad karma binds. Shankara reads the verse as freedom through dedication of action. Ramanuja emphasises that the liberated soul reaches the Lord. Gandhi saw here the heart of the Gita's teaching of selfless work.

Living it today

Before starting work each day, offer it inwardly to something higher. It lightens the weight of success and failure alike.
