About Amaramkavu
Amaramkavu is a sacred grove and Hindu shrine at Kolani, within Thodupuzha municipality in Idukki district, Kerala. The presiding deity is Vana Durga, the goddess of the forest, worshipped in the open setting of the grove. Covering close to three acres, it is described as the largest sacred grove in Idukki district, and it is valued both as a place of worship and as a pocket of native forest rich in plants, birds and small animals.
Sacred groves, called kavu in Malayalam, are an old part of Kerala's religious life. Families and villages set aside patches of forest for a goddess, for serpent deities or for local guardian spirits, and by custom trees in these groves are not cut and the land is not cleared. Over time this protection has kept alive many old trees, medicinal plants, climbers and freshwater springs that have vanished from the surrounding countryside. Amaramkavu belongs to this tradition. Detailed historical records of the shrine are not widely available, and its origins are best described as old and rooted in local devotion.
Visitors find a shaded grove of tall trees and dense undergrowth, with the shrine of the goddess set within it, in keeping with the belief that the forest goddess prefers to dwell under the open sky among the trees. The atmosphere is quiet and cool even on warm days. As in other Kerala shrines, worship follows local custom, and visitors are expected to respect both the rituals and the grove itself by keeping to paths and leaving plants and animals undisturbed.
