About Birla Mandir, Jaipur

The Birla Mandir, also called the Lakshmi Narayan Temple, stands in the Tilak Nagar area of Jaipur at the foot of Moti Dungri hill. Built entirely of white marble on a raised platform, it shines brightly by day and is beautifully lit at night, making it one of the most photographed sights of the Pink City. The presiding deities are Lord Vishnu as Narayan and Goddess Lakshmi, and the temple is a calm place for prayer amid the busy city.

The temple was built by the Birla family, who have constructed several Lakshmi Narayan temples across India. Work began in the late 1970s and the temple was opened in 1988. A popular story says the land was given to the Birlas by the former royal family of Jaipur for a token sum of one rupee. Unlike the city's older temples, it has no long legend of its own; it was conceived as a modern place of worship that also celebrates India's spiritual heritage.

The temple has three domes and towers rising above a spacious hall. Inside, the marble images of Lakshmi and Narayan stand in the sanctum, with Ganesha and other deities nearby. Stained glass windows show scenes from Hindu scriptures, and verses from the Gita and Upanishads are inscribed on the walls. The outer walls carry carvings of saints, sages and great figures from different traditions and history. Gardens surround the temple, and a small museum below it displays items connected with the Birla family. The open terrace offers good views of Moti Dungri and the surrounding city.
