About Brahma Temple
The Jagatpita Brahma Mandir stands near the western shore of Pushkar Lake in the small town of Pushkar, about 15 km from Ajmer in Rajasthan. It is dedicated to Lord Brahma, the creator in the Hindu trinity. Although Brahma is honoured in prayers everywhere, temples devoted mainly to him are very rare, and Pushkar is the best known of them. For this reason the temple, together with the lake and its ghats, is among the most important pilgrimage places in Rajasthan, and Pushkar is often called the king of tirthas.
According to the Padma Purana, Brahma killed a demon with a lotus flower, and the petals fell to earth at three places, forming three lakes; the largest became Pushkar. Brahma then chose this spot for a great yajna. Tradition says his consort Savitri was late for the ceremony, so another bride, Gayatri, was seated beside him; in anger Savitri cursed that Brahma would be worshipped only at Pushkar. This legend is often told to explain why his temples are so few. The shrine is believed to be very old, but the present structure is generally dated to around the 14th century, with many later repairs and additions.
The temple stands on a raised platform reached by a flight of marble steps. A red-painted shikhara rises over the sanctum, and the hamsa, the swan that carries Brahma, appears above the entrance. Inside, the four-faced image of Brahma sits with Gayatri beside him. Floors and walls are set with silver coins and marble slabs placed by devotees in memory of loved ones. On the hills around the town stand temples of Savitri and Gayatri, which many pilgrims visit as part of the same journey.
