About Chamunda Devi Mysore
Sri Chamundeshwari Temple crowns Chamundi Hills, about 1,000 metres above sea level, on the edge of Mysuru in Karnataka. It is dedicated to Goddess Chamundeshwari, a fierce form of Durga, who is the guardian deity of Mysuru and of the Wadiyar royal family. The city's name is linked to the buffalo demon Mahishasura, whom the goddess is said to have slain here. The temple is at the heart of the famous Mysuru Dasara celebrations.
According to legend, Mahishasura terrorised the region until Goddess Chamundeshwari fought and destroyed him, giving the area the name Mahishuru, which became Mysuru. A shrine is believed to have existed on the hill for many centuries. The Wadiyar kings of Mysore were devoted patrons; in the seventeenth century a stairway was built up the hill, and the temple's tall gopuram was added by Krishnaraja Wadiyar III in the nineteenth century.
The temple has a seven-tiered Dravidian-style gopuram with carved figures and a gold-plated finial. Inside, the goddess is richly adorned. On the hilltop stands a large statue of Mahishasura, and partway down the steps is a huge monolithic Nandi, one of the largest in India. The hilltop offers wide views of Mysuru city.
