About Chandi Mandir

Chandi Mandir is a temple of the goddess Chandi, the fierce, victorious form of Durga, standing beside the Chandigarh–Kalka highway in Panchkula district of Haryana, with the Shivalik hills rising behind it. The city of Chandigarh, a short drive away, is widely said to take its name from this shrine, and the area around it is also known as Chandimandir, home to a large army cantonment. For families across Chandigarh, Panchkula and Mohali it is one of the most visited Devi temples, along with the nearby Mata Mansa Devi shrine.

Chandi is celebrated in the Devi Mahatmya (Durga Saptashati), where the goddess defeats demons such as Chanda, Munda and Mahishasura. Local tradition holds that the shrine here is very old and has long been a place of worship for people of the Shivalik foothills, though reliable early records are scarce. Over time the temple has been rebuilt and expanded, and it is now looked after together with the Mansa Devi shrine by the state shrine board.

The temple sits on a low rise among trees, reached by a short flight of steps from the road. The main shrine holds the image of Chandi Devi, and there are also shrines for other deities, including Radha-Krishna, Hanuman, Shiva and Rama. The buildings follow the familiar North Indian style, with a modest spire above the sanctum and an open hall in front, painted in bright colours. During the two Navratris the temple is decorated with lights and flowers, and long queues of devotees form from early morning, while bhajans and langar add to the festive atmosphere.
