About Chaturbhuj Temple
The Chaturbhuj Temple rises high above the small historic town of Orchha in Niwari district, Madhya Pradesh, close to the Betwa river and just south of the famous Ram Raja Temple. Its name means the one with four arms, a title of Vishnu. With massive walls and tall spires, the temple looks almost like a fortress or palace, and it is one of the tallest temples built in its period. Today Radha-Krishna are worshipped in the sanctum, and the temple is a protected monument and a highlight of any visit to Orchha.
The temple was built by the Bundela rulers of Orchha in the 16th century. Work was begun by Raja Madhukar Shah and completed under his son Vir Singh Deo. According to a much-loved local legend, Madhukar Shah's queen, Ganesh Kunwari, was a devotee of Rama and brought an image of the Lord from Ayodhya to be installed here. While the temple was being built, she kept the image in her palace. When the time came to move it, the image could not be shifted, and so Rama remained in the palace, which became the Ram Raja Temple, where he is worshipped as a king. The grand Chaturbhuj Temple was later given other images.
The temple stands on a high stone platform reached by a steep flight of steps. Its plan is cross-shaped, and the inside is a vast, lofty hall rising through several storeys, with large arched openings that let in light. The exterior is crowned by tall, curved spires in the Nagara manner, mixed with domes, kiosks and arches drawn from palace and fort design, showing the blend of Rajput and Mughal-era styles typical of Bundela architecture. Narrow staircases lead to the upper levels and roof, which give sweeping views of Orchha's palaces, cenotaphs and the river.
