About Chattarpur Temple Delhi
Chhatarpur Mandir, officially Shri Adya Katyayani Shaktipeeth Mandir, is a huge temple complex in Chhatarpur, South Delhi, near Mehrauli. It is dedicated to Goddess Katyayani, the sixth form of Durga worshipped during Navratri. Spread over a very large area, it is among the largest temple complexes in India and contains many shrines to Durga, Shiva, Rama, Krishna, Hanuman and other deities. During Navratri it attracts enormous crowds, with special arrangements for devotees.
The temple was founded in 1974 by Baba Sant Nagpal Ji, a revered saint and devotee of the goddess. Work continued for many years as the complex grew, with new shrines and halls added over time. Baba Nagpal Ji passed away in 1998, and his samadhi lies within the temple grounds. The temple is managed by a trust that also runs charitable activities. Over the decades it has become one of the most visited temples in the capital.
The shrines are built mainly of white marble, with fine jali (lattice) work and carvings in a blend of South and North Indian styles. The main shrine of Goddess Katyayani is richly decorated. The complex includes spacious courtyards, gardens, halls for gatherings and a tall Hanuman statue that can be seen from a distance.
