About Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati
Shreemant Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati Temple is in Budhwar Peth in the old heart of Pune, Maharashtra. It is the city's most famous Ganesha temple, visited by thousands of devotees every day. The richly adorned idol of Ganesha, decked in gold ornaments, is visible even from the street through the temple's open front. The temple is the centre of Pune's celebrated Ganeshotsav, when its decorations and procession draw huge crowds from across Maharashtra.
The temple's story begins with Dagdusheth Gadve, a well-known sweet-maker (halwai) of Pune. In the 1890s, after losing his only son to a plague epidemic, he and his wife were advised by their guru to install a Ganesha idol and worship it. The temple grew from this act of faith. It is closely associated with the early years of the public Ganeshotsav, which Lokmanya Tilak promoted to bring people together during the freedom movement.
The temple is a compact structure with an ornate front of marble and carved arches. Inside, the large idol is decorated with gold jewellery and fresh flowers. Because the shrine opens onto the road, passers-by can offer a quick prayer without entering. The trust that runs the temple is well known for its charitable and social work.
