About Gop Temple
The Gop Temple stands near the villages of Gop and Zinavari in Jamjodhpur taluka of Jamnagar district, Gujarat, beside the Vartu river and below the Gop hill of the Barda range. Only the stone sanctum and part of its tower survive, giving it an unusual, bare outline. Yet historians value it greatly, because it is considered the oldest standing stone temple in Saurashtra and one of the earliest in western India. It is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India as a monument of national importance.
Scholars have proposed dates ranging from the 5th to the 7th century, but most place it in the late 6th or early 7th century, during the rule of the Maitraka dynasty of Valabhi. Scientific dating of a wooden beam from the structure has supported a date in the mid-6th century. Locally the shrine is often called a Surya (Sun) temple, and carvings associated with Vishnu, Skanda and Surya have been noted at the site, though the original presiding deity is not certain. Two old stone images inside the sanctum are known locally as Rama and Lakshmana.
The temple rises on a high, square plinth of heavy stone blocks laid without mortar. The plain sanctum walls support a pyramidal roof built in receding tiers, decorated with arched window motifs (gavakshas) and crowned by a single stone amalaka. A small Ganesha figure can still be seen on one side of the tower. The original temple had a covered walkway around the sanctum and an inner courtyard, of which only traces remain. Architecture lovers note its links with early temples of Kashmir and the Chalukya country.
