About Govind Dev Ji Temple
The Govind Dev Ji Temple stands in the Jai Niwas garden of the City Palace complex in the heart of old Jaipur. Lord Krishna is worshipped here as Govind Dev together with Radha, and the temple is the spiritual centre of the city. Thousands of devotees gather each day for the seven darshans, called jhankis, when the curtains open to reveal the deities in fresh attire. For many families of Jaipur, the day begins with a visit to Govind Dev Ji.
Tradition holds that the image was made by Vajranabha, Krishna's great-grandson, and was later rediscovered in Vrindavan by Rupa Goswami, a leading disciple of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, in the 16th century. A grand red sandstone temple was built for it in Vrindavan by Raja Man Singh of Amber. In 1670, when Vrindavan's temples faced attack, the image was secretly carried away and, after several halts over many decades, was brought to Jaipur. Sawai Jai Singh II, the founder of Jaipur, installed it in his palace gardens and declared Govind Dev the real sovereign of the state, ruling as the deity's chief minister.
The temple is not a towering shrine but an elegant palace-like pavilion facing the Chandra Mahal, the royal residence, so that the rulers could see the deity from their palace. The sanctum holds Govind Dev with Radha and her companions, richly dressed and decorated. A large pillarless hall in front, built in modern times, lets thousands of devotees sit for darshan and kirtan. Gardens and fountains surround the temple, and the atmosphere during aarti, with bells, conch and chanting, is unforgettable.
