About Guruvayur Temple
Guruvayur Sri Krishna Temple is in the town of Guruvayur in Thrissur district, Kerala. The presiding deity, Guruvayurappan, is Lord Vishnu worshipped as the child Krishna, standing with four arms holding the conch, discus, mace and lotus. Often called 'Bhuloka Vaikuntham', the abode of Vishnu on earth, it is one of the most important Krishna temples in India. It is famous for its many weddings, the Tulabharam offering and its temple elephants.
Legend says the idol was once worshipped by Lord Krishna's parents in Dwaraka. When Dwaraka was submerged, Guru Brihaspati and Vayu, the wind god, carried the idol and installed it here with the blessing of Lord Shiva, giving the town its name, Guru-Vayu-Ur. The temple is linked to great devotees such as Melpathur Narayana Bhattathiri, who composed the Narayaneeyam, and Poonthanam. The Guruvayur Devaswom, a board set up by the state, manages the temple today.
The temple follows classic Kerala architecture, with a square sanctum (sreekovil), sloping copper-clad roofs and wide circular corridors. A tall gold-covered flagstaff (dhwajasthambham) and a large lamp tower (deepasthambham) stand at the east entrance and glow with oil lamps in the evening. Murals from the Puranas decorate the walls, and the Rudratheertham tank lies on the north side.
