About Jhandewalan Mandir Delhi

Jhandewalan Temple, also known as Jhandewali Mata Mandir, is a popular Durga temple in central Delhi, between Karol Bagh and Paharganj. It is dedicated to Goddess Adi Shakti, worshipped here as Jhandewali Mata. The temple is one of Delhi's busiest during Navratri, when devotees queue for hours. It is close to the Jhandewalan metro station, making it easy to visit from anywhere in the city. Families visit throughout the year to seek the blessings of the Mother Goddess.

According to tradition, in the 18th century a devout cloth merchant named Badri Bhagat used to meditate in this area, which was then covered in hills and forest. He is said to have had a vision of the goddess and, while digging at the spot, found an ancient image of the Devi. A temple was built there, and a flag (jhanda) was raised on top, which gave the place its name. The temple is managed by a society named after Badri Bhagat.

The original image of the goddess is worshipped in a cave shrine (gufa) at a lower level, while a newer idol of the goddess is installed in the main temple above. The complex has a large hall and shrines to other deities. The giant Hanuman statue of Karol Bagh, a well-known Delhi landmark, is close by.
