About Kainchi Dham
Kainchi Dham is the ashram of the twentieth-century saint Neem Karoli Baba, lovingly called Maharaj-ji, in the hills of the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand. It lies at Kainchi on the Nainital–Almora road, about 9 km from Bhowali and about 17 km from Nainital, on the bank of a small mountain stream, the Shipra. The heart of the ashram is a Hanuman temple, and Neem Karoli Baba, himself a great devotee of Hanuman, is worshipped here as well. In recent decades the ashram has become one of the best-known spiritual destinations in Uttarakhand, visited by devotees from across India and abroad.
In 1962 Neem Karoli Baba and a local resident, Purnanand, chose this forested spot; Purnanand is remembered as having donated the land. The ashram was established in 1964, and the Hanuman idol was installed and the temple consecrated on 15 June 1964. That date is celebrated every year as the foundation day, when a large fair is held and prasad is served to huge crowds. Neem Karoli Baba passed away in September 1973; his ashes were placed at Kainchi, and his life-size statue was consecrated on 15 June 1976. Western seekers such as Ram Dass helped spread his name abroad, and later visitors have included Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg.
The ashram is a group of simple, well-kept temples and buildings in a narrow green valley, with the stream flowing past and pine-covered hills all around. Besides the Hanuman temple and the shrine of Neem Karoli Baba, which holds his statue, there are shrines of Lakshmi Narayan, Parvati, Ganesha, Kartikeya and Vindhyavasini Devi, and a Shiva linga. Visitors usually cross a small bridge from the road, leave their footwear, and walk quietly from shrine to shrine. The atmosphere is calm and devotional, with bhajans, aarti and the recitation of the Hanuman Chalisa.
