About Kalighat Temple

Kalighat Kali Temple stands in south Kolkata, West Bengal, near the old course of the Hooghly known as Adi Ganga. It is dedicated to Goddess Kali in her Dakshina Kali form, with striking large eyes, a long golden tongue and four golden hands. Counted among the 51 Shakti Peethas, it is one of the most visited shrines in eastern India. Many believe the name Kolkata itself comes from 'Kalikata', linked to this ancient place of Kali worship.

According to tradition, when Lord Shiva carried the body of Sati in grief, Lord Vishnu's Sudarshana Chakra cut it into pieces, and the toes of her right foot fell here. A shrine has existed at Kalighat for many centuries and is mentioned in medieval Bengali texts. The present temple was built in the early nineteenth century with the support of the Sabarna Roy Choudhury family, landlords of the area, and it has been cared for by hereditary priestly families ever since.

The temple follows the traditional Bengali 'aat-chala' style, with a curved, eight-sloped roof topped by a small spire. Inside, the black stone image of the goddess is adorned with gold and silver ornaments. Around the main shrine you will find the Natmandir hall for gatherings, a sacrificial area, and the Kundupukur sacred tank. Small shrines to Shiva, Radha-Krishna and other deities stand within the complex.
