About Kalika Mata Temple

The Kalika Mata Temple stands at the summit of Pavagadh hill in Panchmahal district, Gujarat, about 50 km from Vadodara, at a height of roughly 800 metres. The goddess Mahakali, worshipped here as Kalika Mata, is one of the most popular forms of the Mother in Gujarat, and the climb to her shrine is a cherished pilgrimage. The temple lies within the Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park, which is inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and includes the hill fortifications and the historic city of Champaner below.

The temple is counted among the Shakti Peethas. Tradition often says that a toe of Sati fell here, though lists and accounts differ. Pavagadh has long been sacred to both Hindus and Jains; the hill was an important Jain pilgrimage centre from medieval times, and Jain temples still stand on its slopes. The Kali Yantra worshipped in the temple is believed to date from around the 10th or 11th century. The temple was redeveloped in recent years, and a new shikhara and enlarged courtyard were completed in 2022.

Three images are worshipped in the sanctum: Mahakali in the centre, with Kali on one side and Bahuchara Mata on the other. From the top, there are sweeping views of the Panchmahal plains and the ruins of Champaner. Pilgrims usually drive or take a bus to Machi, the halfway point, then ride the ropeway or climb steps to the upper part of the hill, finishing with a final flight of steps to the temple. Along the way are small shrines, lakes and the remains of old fortifications that once guarded the hill.
