About Khajrana Ganesh Temple

Khajrana Ganesh Temple is in the Khajrana area of Indore, Madhya Pradesh. It is dedicated to Lord Ganesha and is one of the most popular temples in central India. Devotees believe that prayers made here are fulfilled, and many return to give thanks. The temple is especially busy on Wednesdays, the day sacred to Ganesha, and during Ganesh Chaturthi. It has also become known as one of the wealthiest Ganesha temples in the country.

The temple is associated with Rani Ahilyabai Holkar, the renowned Maratha queen of Indore. According to local tradition, a priest dreamt that a Ganesha idol lay buried in the area; it was dug out of a pond, and in 1735 a temple was built to house it. Over the centuries the temple has grown steadily, and today it is managed with the involvement of the local administration and the hereditary priest family.

The main shrine has a silver-decorated sanctum, and the idol of Ganesha, with large eyes, is decorated daily. The complex has expanded to include many smaller shrines to other deities. A common custom is for devotees to tie a sacred thread or draw a symbol while making a wish, and to return when it is fulfilled.
