About Kopeshwar Temple

Kopeshwar Temple stands at Khidrapur in the Shirol taluka of Kolhapur district, Maharashtra, on the bank of the Krishna river close to the Karnataka border. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva as Kopeshwar, the angry Lord, and is unusual because Lord Vishnu, called Dhopeshwar, is worshipped in the same sanctum while there is no Nandi facing the shrine. The temple is celebrated for the beauty and quantity of its carving and is protected as a monument of national importance.

The temple's legend is connected with Sati. Tradition says that after Sati gave up her life in the fire of her father Daksha's sacrifice, Shiva's fury could not be calmed, and Vishnu brought him to this place to pacify him; hence the name Kopeshwar and the presence of Vishnu beside him. Nandi is absent, it is said, because Sati rode him to her father's house. Historically, the temple was built in the 12th century under the Shilahara kings of Kolhapur, with Gandaraditya often credited, and inscriptions show later gifts by the Yadava (Seuna) rulers. The town, known in old records as Koppam, also saw a major battle between the Chalukyas and Cholas in the 11th century.

The temple has four parts: the Swarga Mandapa, the main hall, the vestibule and the sanctum. The Swarga Mandapa is a circular pillared hall with an opening in the roof, through which the sky can be seen, with a round stone slab beneath it. The base of the temple is lined with a long row of carved elephants that appear to carry the building, and the outer walls are covered with figures of deities, dancers and musicians. Inside, the ceilings and pillars are elaborately carved.
