About Manakula Vinayagar Temple
The Arulmigu Manakula Vinayagar Temple stands in the heart of old Puducherry, a short walk from the Sri Aurobindo Ashram and the seafront Promenade. Lord Ganesha is worshipped here as Manakula Vinayagar. It is the best-known and most visited temple in Puducherry, popular with local families, pilgrims from Tamil Nadu and visitors from around the world who come to see the French Quarter. Many people visit before starting a new venture, buying a vehicle or setting out on a journey.
The name is usually explained as coming from the Tamil words manal, sand, and kulam, pond, because the temple stood near a pond filled with sand by the sea. The shrine is older than the French settlement of Pondicherry, which began in the second half of the 17th century. Tradition says that during French rule there were attempts to remove the image, and that the idol was even thrown into the sea, only to be found back in its place the next day. Whatever the details, devotion to the deity continued, and the temple remained in worship through colonial times and has been renovated many times since.
The temple is built in the Dravidian style, with a gopuram at the entrance and a gold-covered vimana over the sanctum. The inner walls are painted with many forms of Ganesha and scenes from his stories. The temple owns a golden chariot that is taken out on festival days. For many years a temple elephant greeted visitors at the entrance, a much-loved sight in the town.
