About Shri Mangueshi Temple

The Shri Mangueshi Temple stands in the green village of Mangueshi at Priol, in Ponda taluka of Goa, about 21 km from Panaji. Lord Shiva is worshipped here as Shri Manguesh, in the form of a linga. He is the kuldevta, or family deity, of many Goud Saraswat Brahmin families and other communities, who return here for weddings, thread ceremonies and family vows. It is one of the largest and most visited temples in Goa and a calm contrast to the state's busy beaches.

According to local tradition, Shiva once took the form of a tiger to playfully frighten Parvati, who cried out to him as the Lord of the mountains, and from her words the name Manguesh is said to have come. The original shrine stood at Kushasthali (present-day Cortalim) near the Zuari river. In the 16th century, during Portuguese rule over the coastal districts, devotees carried the linga inland to Priol, which was then outside Portuguese control, and rebuilt the shrine there. The present temple dates largely from the 18th century, when the area came under Maratha influence and the temple received land grants.

The temple shows the distinctive Goan style, which blends Hindu planning with features influenced by local European and Islamic buildings. Visitors enter through a courtyard to see a tall, white, seven-storey deepastambha (lamp tower), which glows with oil lamps on festival nights. The main hall has a domed roof, chandeliers and a silver-plated doorway to the sanctum. A large temple tank lies beside the complex, and smaller shrines to related deities stand around the courtyard.
