About Pitambara Peeth
Pitambara Peeth is a temple and ashram complex at the entrance of Datia town in northern Madhya Pradesh, between Gwalior and Jhansi. Its chief deity is Bagalamukhi, one of the ten Mahavidyas, worshipped here as Pitambara Mai, the goddess dressed in yellow. She is believed to protect devotees and silence their enemies, and yellow clothes, flowers and offerings are part of her worship. The Peeth is especially crowded on Saturdays. It is also known for a temple to Dhumavati, another of the Mahavidyas, whose shrines are rare. The complex is run by a trust that keeps a Sanskrit library and teaches Sanskrit free to children.
According to the Peeth, in July 1929 a young sannyasi stopped at Datia for a night on his way from Jhansi to Gwalior and decided to stay, drawn by the town's Sanskrit scholars. In December of that year he settled at the old Vankhandeshwar Shiva shrine to perform tapas. His real name and origins were never known, and the townspeople simply called him Shri Swami Ji Maharaj. Here he established the worship of Pitambara Mai and, later, the shrine of Dhumavati. The Shiva lingam at Vankhandeshwar is believed by devotees to date back to the age of the Mahabharata.
The complex is a peaceful ashram rather than one large temple. Besides the shrines of Pitambara Mai and Dhumavati, there are temples to Vankhandeshwar Mahadev, Hanuman, Kal Bhairav, Batuk Bhairav, Parshuram and Haridra Ganesh, along with a samadhi shrine of Swami Ji and a sacred pond, Haridra Sarovar. Yellow is everywhere, in the clothes of devotees and in the flowers and sweets they offer. The temple of Pitambara Mai does not accept money offerings from devotees. Saturday is the most popular day of the week, although on Saturdays the tilak and garland offerings for Mai are not performed. Many visitors also see the seven-storey Datia Palace, built by Bir Singh Deo in 1614.
