About Radha Raman Temple
The Radha Raman Temple stands in the old lanes of Vrindavan, a short walk from the Yamuna and the Banke Bihari Temple. Here Krishna is worshipped as Radha Raman, the beloved of Radha. It is counted among the seven old Goswami temples of Vrindavan, the shrines linked with the disciples of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, and is especially dear to followers of the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition. Unlike many shrines whose original images were moved away during troubled times, devotees believe the deity here has never left Vrindavan since it first appeared.
Tradition says that Gopala Bhatta Goswami, a close follower of Sri Chaitanya, found a set of Shaligrama stones in the Kali Gandaki river in Nepal and brought them to Vrindavan, where he worshipped them with great love. According to the temple's account, one full-moon night in the mid-16th century one of the stones took the form of Krishna standing in his graceful three-fold pose, playing the flute. This appearance day is still celebrated every year. Radha is honoured beside the deity in a symbolic form rather than as a separate image. Gopala Bhatta Goswami's samadhi lies within the complex, and service of the deity has been carried on by the Goswami families descended from his disciples for generations. It is said that the kitchen fire lit in the early days has been kept burning ever since.
The temple is modest in size and built in the courtyard-and-haveli manner seen across Braj, with carved stone and painted walls rather than a towering spire. The deity is small but richly dressed, and the shringar changes through the day and with the seasons. Visitors gather in the courtyard for darshan, which opens and closes at set times, and kirtan is often heard in the evening.
