About Sabarimala Ayyappa Temple

Sabarimala Sree Dharma Sastha Temple is a hilltop shrine to Lord Ayyappa in the forests of the Periyar Tiger Reserve, Pathanamthitta district, Kerala. It is one of the largest annual pilgrimages in the world. Pilgrims, called Ayyappas or Swamis, observe a vow of about 41 days of simplicity and celibacy, dress in black or blue, and carry the sacred irumudi bundle on their heads. They chant 'Swamiye Saranam Ayyappa' as they climb to the shrine. People of all castes and religions take part as equals.

Lord Ayyappa, also called Dharma Sastha, is believed to be the son of Shiva and Mohini, Vishnu's female form. According to legend he was raised as a prince of the Pandalam royal family and, after defeating the demoness Mahishi, chose to sit in meditation at Sabarimala. The idol is traditionally said to have been installed by Parashurama. The temple is administered by the Travancore Devaswom Board. The Makaravilakku festival in mid-January, when the Makara Jyothi light appears on a distant hill, is its most sacred moment.

The shrine sits on a hilltop called the Sannidhanam, reached by the 18 holy steps (Pathinettampadi), which only pilgrims carrying the irumudi may climb. The sanctum has a gold-plated roof and holds the idol of Ayyappa in a seated yogic posture. Nearby are the Malikappuram Devi temple and a shrine to Vavar, Ayyappa's Muslim companion, reflecting the pilgrimage's spirit of harmony.
