About Shamlaji Temple

Shamlaji Temple stands in a wooded valley of the Aravalli hills on the banks of the Meshvo river, in Aravalli district of north Gujarat. Lord Vishnu is worshipped here in his Gadadhara or Trivikrama form, a four-armed dark image holding mace, discus, lotus and conch, with an unusually large mace. Devotees know him as Shamlaji, the dark one, and treat him as Krishna; a small golden flute has been added to his hand. The temple is also called Dholi Dhajawala for the white flag on its spire, and it is deeply revered by the local tribal communities, who call the deity Kaliyo Dev.

Shamlaji was already an important Hindu centre in the 6th century and probably had a sculpture workshop, whose works are now in museums in Mumbai and Vadodara. The main image is thought to date from the 7th–8th century, while the present temple dates from the 15th–16th century, perhaps begun on an 11th-century Chaulukya base. According to one legend, Brahma did penance here and Vishnu appeared as Shamlaji. Another says the divine architect Vishwakarma built the temple in a single night. A third tells of a tribal farmer who found the image while ploughing, after which a merchant built the shrine; the rulers of Idar later beautified it.

The temple is built of stone and brick on two storeys of pillars, with a tall north Indian spire over the sanctum and domed ceilings inside. Its outer walls are richly carved with images of Vishnu and Lakshmi-Narayana and with scenes from the Bhagavata Purana, Ramayana and Mahabharata, and the courtyard has a life-size carved elephant. Unusually, cow images recall Krishna's childhood as a cowherd. Around the main shrine are older temples, including Trilokeshwar Mahadev opposite, a Kashi Vishwanath shrine below ground level and the carved gateway of Harishchandra ni Chori.
