About Siddhesvara Dham
Siddhesvara Dham, popularly called the Char Dham of Namchi, is a modern pilgrimage complex on Solophok hill, a few kilometres from the town of Namchi in South Sikkim (now Namchi district). It was built by the Government of Sikkim as a pilgrimage and cultural tourism project and was opened in 2011, so unlike most temples in this guide it is a recent creation, not an ancient shrine. Its aim is to let devotees see replicas of India's most sacred Hindu shrines in one place, set against the Himalayan ranges.
The idea behind the complex is the traditional Char Dham pilgrimage to Badrinath, Dwarka, Puri and Rameswaram, which few people can complete in one journey. Here these four shrines are represented by replica temples, together with replicas of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Shiva. The complex is named after Shiva as Siddheshwara, and it also honours Kirateshwar, the form in which Shiva is said to have appeared as a hunter before Arjuna, a story from the Mahabharata that is also linked with Sikkim's local traditions.
The centrepiece is a huge statue of Shiva seated in meditation, rising over the hilltop and painted in bright colours; it is commonly said to be about 108 feet high. Around it are arranged the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines, and nearby are the replica temples of the four dhams, along with a statue of Kirateshwar and other shrines. Wide stairways, gardens and viewing terraces make it easy to walk around. On clear days the Kanchenjunga range can be seen from the hill, adding to the beauty of the setting.
