About Siddhivinayak Temple

Shree Siddhivinayak Temple is in Prabhadevi, central Mumbai, and is the city's best-known Ganesha temple. Lord Ganesha here is worshipped as Siddhivinayak, the giver of success. The black stone idol has its trunk turned to the right, a form considered especially powerful, and is flanked by Riddhi and Siddhi. Devotees from all walks of life, including well-known public figures, come here to pray before new beginnings, and Tuesdays are especially busy.

The original temple was built in 1801 by Laxman Vithu Patil, with funding from a devout local woman, Deubai Patil, who wished that the Lord would bless childless women. For many years it remained a small shrine. Its popularity grew greatly in the twentieth century, and the temple was rebuilt in the 1990s into the present multi-storeyed structure. It is managed by a trust set up by the state government.

The idol is about two and a half feet tall, carved from a single black stone, with four arms holding a lotus, an axe, a rosary and modaks. The inner roof of the sanctum is gold-plated, and the wooden doors are carved with images of the Ashtavinayak Ganeshas. The building is topped by a central gold-plated dome.
