About Trinetra Ganesh Temple
The Trinetra Ganesh Temple stands inside Ranthambore Fort, high on a hill within Ranthambore National Park, about 12 km from the town of Sawai Madhopur. Ganesha is worshipped here as Trinetra, the three-eyed one, with a third eye on his forehead. The temple is the most popular of the three Hindu temples inside the fort, and thousands of visitors come every Wednesday. It is famous for a charming custom: devotees post letters to Ganesha asking for help with jobs, exams and family matters, and families send him the first invitation card of a wedding, so a postman delivers stacks of mail to the temple.
The temples inside the fort, dedicated to Ganesha, Shiva and Ramlalaji, are dated to the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. According to local legend, Hammiradeva, the Chauhan ruler of Ranthambore, was under siege by the army of Alauddin Khalji when Ganesha appeared to him in a dream and promised help; the king then built this temple in gratitude. History records that Alauddin finally took the fort in 1301. Ranthambore Fort later passed through the hands of the Mewar rulers, the Mughals and the Kachwahas of Jaipur, and in 2013 it was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as one of the Hill Forts of Rajasthan.
The temple is built of red stone from Karauli and is reached on foot through the fort's gateways, a walk of stone paths and steps past old walls, tanks and ruins, with langurs often watching from the trees. In the sanctum Ganesha is shown with his wives Riddhi and Siddhi and his sons Shubh and Labh, which is why devotees speak of it as a temple of Ganesha's whole family. Letters and invitation cards are laid at the feet of the deity. On Ganesh Chaturthi a large fair is held here, drawing lakhs of pilgrims up the fort road.
