About Tulja Bhavani Temple

The Tulja Bhavani Temple stands at Tuljapur in Dharashiv (Osmanabad) district of Maharashtra, on the Balaghat hills about 45 km from Solapur. Goddess Bhavani, a fierce form of Durga, is the kuldevi (family goddess) of a very large number of families in Maharashtra and neighbouring states. She is best known as the family goddess of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, and the temple is one of the most important pilgrim centres in the state.

Tulja Bhavani is counted as one of the three full peethas among Maharashtra's three and a half Shakti Peethas, along with Kolhapur and Mahur, with Saptashrungi as the half. It is not part of every classical list of the 51 peethas. According to legend, the goddess slew the demon Mahishasura and other demons who troubled the sages here, and she is said to have guided Lord Rama on his search for Sita. Popular tradition holds that she blessed Shivaji with a sword, often called the Bhavani talwar. Parts of the temple are believed to date from about the 12th century, with many later additions.

The temple is built in the Hemadpanthi style of black stone and sits in a hollow, so pilgrims walk down a long flight of steps through gateways named after Shivaji's parents, Rajmata Jijau and Shahaji, to reach it. The black stone image of the goddess has eight arms and shows her slaying the demon Mahishasura. Unusually, it is a movable (chala) image: it is taken from the sanctum and laid to rest for some days at fixed times of the year. The compound also has the Kallol Tirth and Gomukh Tirth tanks, and the Siddhi Vinayak and other smaller shrines.
