About Vaikom Sree Mahadeva Temple

The Vaikom Sree Mahadeva Temple stands in the town of Vaikom in Kottayam district of Kerala, near the shores of Vembanad Lake. Lord Shiva, lovingly called Vaikathappan, is worshipped here, and it is counted among the most important Shiva temples in Kerala. Together with the temples at Ettumanoor and Kaduthuruthy, it forms a well-known group, and devotees believe that worshipping at all three on the same day brings special blessings. Vaikathappan is also known as the lord of annadanam, and serving food to devotees is a central tradition here.

According to temple tradition, the linga here was one of those carried by the demon Kharasura, a devotee of Shiva, and the temple is also linked with the sage Parasurama. A distinctive belief is that Shiva appears in three forms during the day: as Dakshinamurthy, the teacher, in the morning; as Kirata, the hunter, at midday; and as Shiva with Parvati in the evening. In modern history, the roads around the temple were the scene of the Vaikom Satyagraha of 1924–25, a peaceful campaign for the right of people of all castes to use the public roads near the temple, which became a landmark in the social reform movement of Kerala.

The temple is built in the traditional Kerala style within a large walled compound with gateway towers on its sides. Its sanctum appears round from outside but is in fact oval in plan, which is rare in Kerala; tradition credits it to the legendary master builder Perumthachan. The sanctum has a copper-sheeted roof, and around it are a namaskara mandapam, a tall flagstaff and a spacious courtyard. The great feast hall used for annadanam is part of the complex, and during festivals the courtyard fills with caparisoned elephants and traditional percussion.
