About Vaishno Devi Mandir
Mata Vaishno Devi Temple is a holy cave shrine in the Trikuta mountains near Katra in Jammu and Kashmir, at an altitude of about 1,580 metres. It is dedicated to the Mother Goddess and is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in India, drawing millions of devotees every year. There is no carved idol; instead the goddess is worshipped in the form of three natural rock formations, called pindis, representing Mahakali, Mahalakshmi and Mahasaraswati. Devotees reach the shrine by a trek of about 13 km from Katra.
According to tradition, the goddess took birth as a young girl named Vaishnavi, devoted to Lord Vishnu. To escape Bhairon Nath, who pursued her, she meditated in a cave at Ardhkuwari for nine months and then came to the Trikuta hills. At the holy cave she took the form of Mahakali and beheaded Bhairon, who, repenting, was granted a blessing that pilgrims would visit his temple to complete their yatra. The shrine is now managed by the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board.
The shrine, called the Bhawan, is a large complex built around the sacred cave. Pilgrims usually enter through newer tunnels to see the three pindis. Along the way you will pass Banganga, Charan Paduka and Ardhkuwari, and above the Bhawan is the Bhairon temple, reachable on foot or by ropeway.
