About Maa Vindhyavasini Temple
The Maa Vindhyavasini Temple stands on the bank of the Ganga at Vindhyachal, about 8 km from Mirzapur in eastern Uttar Pradesh. The goddess Vindhyavasini, meaning she who dwells in the Vindhya hills, is worshipped here as a form of Durga and as Yogmaya. It is one of the most revered Devi shrines of north India and is regarded by devotees as a Shakti Peetha and a Siddh Peetha, where prayers are fulfilled. Vindhyachal lies about 65 km from Varanasi and about 85 km from Prayagraj, and during the two Navratris the town overflows with pilgrims.
According to the Bhagavata tradition, the goddess Yogmaya was born to Nanda and Yashoda in Gokul at the same moment that Krishna was born in Kamsa's prison in Mathura. Vasudeva exchanged the two infants, and when Kamsa tried to dash the baby girl against a stone, she slipped from his hands, appeared in her divine form and warned him that his slayer was already born. Local belief holds that she then chose to make her home in the Vindhya hills, and so she is called Vindhyavasini. The Markandeya Purana and Durga Saptashati also tell of the goddess of the Vindhyas who destroys demons.
The temple is in the crowded heart of Vindhyachal, close to the river ghats, and is approached through lanes lined with stalls selling flowers, red chunari and offerings. Pilgrims usually bathe in the Ganga before darshan. Many also complete the Trikona Parikrama, a triangular circuit linking three shrines: Vindhyavasini as Mahalakshmi, the Kali Khoh cave temple of Mahakali, and the Ashtabhuja temple of Mahasaraswati on a nearby hill. The temple area is being redeveloped under a large government project known as the Vindhya Corridor, which aims to widen the approaches and improve facilities for pilgrims.
