About Vitthal Rukmini Temple
The Shri Vitthal Rukmini Mandir stands in the town of Pandharpur in Solapur district, Maharashtra, on the banks of the Chandrabhaga (Bhima) river. It is the principal temple of Lord Vithoba, also called Vitthal or Panduranga, a form of Vishnu and Krishna, and of his consort Rukmini, known lovingly as Rakhumai. For the Warkari tradition of Maharashtra and northern Karnataka it is the spiritual centre, and the great walking pilgrimage (wari) to Pandharpur on Ashadhi Ekadashi is one of India's largest religious gatherings. Devotees are allowed to touch the feet of the deity, a cherished part of darshan here.
Tradition says that Lord Krishna came to Pandharpur to meet his devotee Pundalik, who was serving his aged parents. Pundalik, not wishing to break his service, threw a brick for the Lord to stand on, and Vithoba has stood on it ever since, hands on his hips, waiting for his devotees. Inscriptions in the temple show that a shrine of Vithoba existed here by the late 12th century, with further building in the 13th century. Saints such as Dnyaneshwar, Namdev, Eknath and Tukaram sang of Vithoba in their abhangas, making Pandharpur the heart of the Marathi bhakti movement. The present structure was rebuilt and enlarged over many centuries.
The temple complex has several entrances. At the main eastern gate, the first step is known as Namdev Payari, honouring Sant Namdev, who wished to lie at the threshold so that devotees' feet would touch him. Halls and courtyards lead to the sanctum, where the black stone image of Vithoba stands on his brick. Rukmini has her own shrine within the complex, along with many smaller shrines. The ghats of the Chandrabhaga, where pilgrims bathe before darshan, are a short walk away.
